The Boerboel is a large dog with great strength, an impressive muscular appearance, and an excellent temperament. The word Boerboel means farm dog. They were used to protect the farm owners from robberies and theft, and protect livestock from wild animals such as Baboons, Lions, Hyenas, etc. They have the natural instinct to protect and often start showing their protective instincts at a very young age. They will patrol your yard or house and will alert you if anyone comes close. If you have kids they often form the closest bonds with them and always keep a watchful eye on them. They are extremely protective of their owners without being overly aggressive and are very wary of strangers until they are properly introduced. They are also very versatile and can be kenneled or housed and live in warm climates or cold.
Boerboels are great family dogs that want nothing more than to be with their families. Their short coats makes them ideal house dogs. They also drool a lot less than other Mastiff breeds. The Boerboel’s temperament is one their greatest qualities. They are rarely the dog that will cause a conflict, but they will not back down if they are challenged. If you are a dominant owner, the dog will fall into its place in your pack. If you are not the leader of your house, a Boerboel will definitely assume that rule. You definitely need to be a pack leader to own this breed. Obedience training is recommended. Boerboels are good with kids, other dogs, cats, and livestock if they are properly socialized at a young age. This breed is not for everyone; so I suggest you do some extensive research before you plan to purchase a Boerboel.
